Oh Pottery Barn...

how I love thee. I am fortunate enough to have subscribed to their emails. Oops, did I say fortunate? I meant unfortunate. These emails taunt me. They make me want to buy things that are overpriced and possibly unnecessary. But I love Pottery Barn and I love these doors. I always keep my eyes open for something like these. My vision is to lean them against a bare wall in the house.
Although in this house they could be used as weapons.

Evan-ism's

I have coined a new word Evan-isms. These would be words, phrases and ideas that Evan comes up with. I am beginning to think I could fill a book.

Me: Evan go pee before we leave the house, ok?

Evan: I don't have to go. I am all out.

Me: No. You need to pee before we go.

Evan: But I haven't had a drink and I am all out.

Me: Your kidney's make pee even when you don't have a drink.

Evan: I don't have any kid-in-nees!

well that did it for me. i bit my tongue and gave up the battle. So each time I tell Evan to go to the bathroom before we go out, I get the same response. But I don't have any kid-in-nees! I think I have him convinced that he does indeed have kidneys.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Me: Evan, do you want some toast and peanut butter?

Evan: no response...

Me: Evan, do you want some toast and peanut butter??

Evan: no response...

Me: EVAN, DO YOU WANT SOME TOAST AND PEANUT BUTTER???

Evan: (very loudly) No, I don't want any toast!!!!

After finally receiving an answer to my question, I am taken aback by his tone. But before I can chastise him for his lack of manners...

Evan: But thanks for asking.

This kid is constantly saying and doing things that make me smile, laugh, shake my head or just plain shock me. He is a character.

Why?

Food for the Soul

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” marianne williamson

I love this quote. True, I am not a religious person, but the words speak to me nonetheless. Such a powerful statement. Words I intend to share with my children.

future politician in training....

Yes, that is a job I think Evan would excel at. So far his personality is made for a career in politics. He is not shy at all about meeting new people and starting conversations. He knows how to schmooze. Unfortunately, I think he is also perfecting that not-so-nice side of politics. You know the part where politicians do things they shouldn't, but unless they are caught they keep doing them?

Let me explain. A part of my day is spent making sure the kids are playing nicely. This usually means making sure Evan is not pushing Taylor down, etc, etc. So if I am in the kitchen and Taylor starts crying in another room I go to investigate. I try to not instantly blame either child unless I witnessed the incident myself. So I usually ask, What happened in here? The answer from the future politician? Evans asks, Did you see me? In others words, did you see me push my sister and if you didn't I will alter my answer accordingly. The first time he said it I had to stop myself from laughing. Now the jig is up and I tell him that if he is asking me if I saw him, then that must mean he was doing something he shouldn't have been doing.

Oh boy, I shudder to think what this kid will come up with next. He certainly has his mind working at all times.

Them

I love them. I couldn't live without them. I appreciate them. I laugh at them. I get frustrated at them. Nothing matters without them.

It is funny when and where certain thought processes occur. Today we packed up the kids and drove to Dino town (near Chilliwack). Dino Town and Bridal Veil Falls are next to each other. So we spent a few hours playing at Dino Town and then went for a quick hike at the Falls. It was great to go to a place made for preschoolers. BOTH, Evan and Taylor had a blast. It is hard to find a place where a 2yr old and a 4 yr old can enjoy themselves. Bonus!

Bridal Veil Falls is a beautiful place. Such a lush forest, so much texture, and so much fresh air. So as the four of us are hiking up the path that leads to the Falls, I have an "a ha" moment. Those that are Oprah fans know what I am talkin' about. A moment that jolts us into an awareness. A moment where something becomes clear. Anyways...I am holding the hands of my kids and watching my husband walk in front of us. This is US, the four of us. This is our family. I love these three people and could not be happier to just be walking with them. Sharing a moment together. It is hard to explain and even harder to write down. I guess the power behind my love for them shocked me. I think I spend so much time being busy. Busy with the day to day routine. Busy worrying and busy being unfocused on what is truly important. them. us.

Today has taught me a valuable lesson. To be present and to slow down. To spend time climbing through rivers and enjoying life together.

Today was a great day. Lots of fun. I can't believe summer is almost over. I must admit I am looking forward to Fall. So many more opportunities for fun with the family.
